Summertime in Budapest
Budapest can offer the tourist so many things all round, making it the ideal city break destination. However, Budapest truly comes into its own during the summer months. With its perfect weather endless sightseeing possibilities you can be as active or laid-back as you feel.
Summer on the Chain Bridge
The Chain Bridge is one of Budapest's most historic and important symbols. During the summer (23 June through to 12 August) it is closed to traffic every Saturday and Sunday leaving families and cyclists free to enjoy the many stalls offering Hungarian crafts and goods. The perfect way to spend a couples of hours in the morning.
Formula 1
One of the major events in the summer in Budapest is the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, which takes place annually in August, at the Hungaroring race track in Mogyorod (19 kilometres from Budapest). The track as the benefit of 80% visibility from any point of the grandstand, which is why it is dubbed the "Shallow Plate". The track is often compared to the Monaco track because of its tight twists and turns. The grand prix takes place on Sunday 3 August and the public have the opportunity to walk through the pits and spot their favourite drivers and teams.
The Sziget Festival
The Sziget Festival is held annualy on the Obudai-sziget (Old Buda Island) which is a large island situated between Buda and Pest with large green park areas. The festival starts at the beginning of August and usually lasts 5 to 7 days. The event has changed over the years from a low-key student event into an international rock festival with vistors of up to 400,000.
Summer on the Chain Bridge
The Chain Bridge is one of Budapest's most famous landmarks and during the summer months it is closed to all traffic giving way to pedestrians and bikers. You can find a selection of goods from the best Hungarian artists and craftsmen, this is not just a place for tourists. At the ends of either side of the bridge you will find large hospitality tents offering a selection of international and traditional Hungarian food as well as cold drinks. Each weekend sees different programs catering for every taste.
